Introduction: How to Sell an Item on EBAY Using the Advanced Tool (Auction Style)

This tutorial will teach you how to sell an item on eBay using the advanced tool. (Auction style)
Advanced tool:
The advanced tool is well suited for business sellers because it offers additional listing features, such as gallery plus, subtitles, and a minimum reserve price for your listing.
Auction-style listings:
You receive bids on your item and sell to the highest bidder. You can also include a Buy It Now price, which lets the buyer purchase the item before the listing's end date.
Please note: This tutorial can be done on any working computer, using any software type and any Internet browser. You don't need any specific skills to sell an item on eBay, you just need to know the basics of a computer.
• Before beginning you need an item to sell on eBay and you need to create a username on the eBay website.
• Additionally, it is highly recommended that when your item sells, the transaction is completed through PAYPAL. PayPal is an easy and safe way to transfer money from one account to another. Therefore, it is very beneficial to have a PayPal account already set up. Further information can be found on Paypal.com.
• Remember to download pictures of the item you are selling to your computer before selling on eBay. It will save you time when you are creating your listing.

Step 1: Starting

To start:
1. Open your internet browser (Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Explorer)
2. Type ineBay.com into your browser
3. Once on the eBay website click on the Sell tab to start selling your item. The sell tab can be found on the left corner of the website, which is shown in the picture above.

Step 2: Switching to the Advanced Tool

After clicking on the Sell tab, the first (top) screenshot above will appear.
Before you begin selling, you want to switch to the advanced tool.
Click on the blue words in the right hand corner 'switch to the advanced tool'. (Shown in the first/top picture above)
Once you click 'switch to the advanced tool' a box will pop up. Click the orange tab that says ' Continue' (shown in the bottom picture)
When you click continue you are ready to begin selling!

Step 3: Create Your Listing

After switching to the advanced listing tool, the screenshot above will appear
When it does appear, type into the text box what you want to sell on eBay. This search will help you select the proper category for your item.
When you finished, click the 'Get Started' tab.

Step 4: Categories

Once you tell eBay what you are selling, they will automatically match your keywords with a category.
For example: I typed in 'mac computer', automatically they matched up my keywords with a suggested list, then I browsed the list and picked the category I felt matched by item best.
For your item: browse the suggested list, once you find your item's correct category : check the box to the left of the desired category then scroll down and click the blue tab 'continue'

Step 5: Optional: EBay's Catalog

Note: eBay might have what your are selling in their catalog. If so, you can choose the item that you are selling from their catolog.
eBay provides detialed descripitons for items that are listed in their catolog already- so selling something that is in their catalog saves you time and adds detailed description to your listing.
If eBay has your item in their catalog find your product, then click the tab 'Sell Yours'
If you can't find your item in eBay's catalog- click on the bolded blue words 'Continue with your listing'.

Step 6: Optional: Add Additional Features to Your Listing

Before you get started describing your listing, eBay provides you with the option to add additional features to your listing.
It is optional:
If you want to add additional features such as subtitle or gallery plus to your listing- click on the 'add or remove options'- which is to the right of the words describe your item.
I highly recommend purchasing the Gallery Plus (Displays a large photo in the search results ). Gallery plus allows potential buyers to see your listing without clicking on the title. It makes it easy for buyers to see your product when scrolling through your items category .
***Gallery Plus can be found under the photos category*** If you want gallery plus added to your listing or any other feature, click on the 'add or remove options' then click the text box to the left of the desired feature then click the blue 'save' tab below.
Sometimes eBay offers free Gallery Plus:) Look for eBay promotions monthly!

Step 7: Begin Creating Your Listing

Begin by describing your item by choosing a Title for your item's listing.
When choosing a title, think of what words you would use if you were looking to purchase the item that you are selling.
Include keywords: For example: If you are selling a NEW MAC Computer make sure to include in you listing ' Brand New Apple Mac Computer' that makes you listing look more attractive than 'Computer'

Step 8: What Condition Is Your Item In?

Continue by following the eBay prompts by informing the buyer what the condition of the item is.
eBay gives you several choices:
Scroll through the choices and click the condition that describes your item the best.

Step 9: Add Pictures to Your Listing

Continue following the eBay prompts by clicking the Add/edit photos tab to upload pictures to enhance your listing. Once you click the Add/edit photos tab select the pictures from your computer that you want to include in your listing.
It is highly recommend to take pictures of whatever you're selling. People online can't pick up and observe an item like they would normally be able to do in a traditional store. Make it easy for them to see what you're selling - provide images from several angles.
Please note: Depending on the item, eBay requires at least one picture uploaded to your listing. eBay lets you upload one image for free, and then each additional pictures have a small fee.

Step 10: Optional: Add Item Specifics

This tab 'Add item specifics' will only appear on some item's listings- it depends on your items category. It usually appears when you are selling electronics and technology.
Optional:
If you are selling an item with multiple parts, eBay has a easy way to add item specifics to your listing.
Let the buyer know what additional items you are offering, along with the main product.
This is important because buyers often refine their search using certain item specifics.
For example: If you are selling a Mac Desktop and a Keyboard let the buyer know! It will set your listing apart.

Step 11: Describe Your Product

Now it's time to sell and market your product. This is the most important part of an eBay listing.
• You need to make your description as detailed as possible.
o The more info you include, the more confident your buyers will be.
• To write a good description, think about what you‘d like to know if you were buying the product yourself.
o Include information such as brand name, condition (new or used), item specifics, model numbers, size, precise dimensions, style and color.

Step 12: Setting Your Price and Duration of Your Listing

Price: Since this is an auction-styled listing, you need to set a starting price for the item. It is a good idea to do a quick search for items similar to yours to get a ballpark estimate of how much it is selling for.
*Keep in mind eBay charges you more the higher your starting price is.
eBay also gives you the option of a Buy it Now price ( which lets the buyer purchase the item before the listing's end date for a fixed price)
Continue following the eBay prompts and set a duration for your listing:
Duration of your listing: You also need to choose how long you want your auction to be open for bidding - either 3, 5, 7, or 10 days.
Tip: Avoid ending auctions at 4am. Often bidders prefer to wait and bid in the last few minutes, hoping others won't fight back.

Step 13: Optional: Give Charity

Continue following the eBay prompts to 'eBay Giving Works'
Optional: eBay gives you the option to donate a portion of your final sale price to your favoirte non-profit.
• If you want to give a portion of your sales to charity, check off the bullet next eBay's featured charity. You can also select another non-profit by clicking the blue words 'Or, select another nonprofit you love'.
• If you do not wish to donate, click to the left of 'I do not wish to donate at this time', which is shown in the picture below.

Step 14: Payment and Shipping

Tell buyers how to pay you and state your shipping policy.
You need to create a consistent policy for your listings.
For payment:
Under the section 'Select how you'll be paid' click on the blue words 'Create payment policy'.
Then you create a policy to your liking.
For shipping:
Under the section 'Add shipping details' click on the blue words 'Create shipping policy'.
Then you create a policy to your liking.
*If you have already created a policy and want to change the default policy, click on the blue words 'Edit selected policy'.
• For payment it can be found next to the blue words 'create payment policy' .
• For shipping it can be found next to the blue words ' create shipping policy.'
Note: To manage your business policies at any time, go to the Account tab in My eBay and then click Business Policies.
For example: on my account I have listed my automatic policy as payment through Paypal only and free flat rate shipping.

Step 15: Optional: Packaging Details

You can add packaging details to your listing.
This is only necessary if your charging shipping costs to the buyer depending on the package size, weight, and location of your buyer.
If needed: select your package type by scrolling through the text box options under the heading 'package type'. Then, you can enter a custom weight in the text box displayed under the heading 'weight'.

Step 16: Add Other Details

This section is your last chance to add details to your listing.
Inform the buyer of your return policy.
You can create an automatic return policy by clicking on the blue words 'create return policy' or you can edit your policy by clicking on the blue words 'edit selected policy'
You can also add sales tax to your listing and add buyer requirements

Step 17: Fees

eBay will now tell you how much you owe them.
Your fees are based on how high your listing price is, how many pictures you post, and any other additional options you choose to enhance your listing .
Once you see your fees so far, click the blue 'continue' tab.

Step 18: List Your Item

eBay provides you with a detailed listing invoice.
When you finish reviewing the invoice fees, list your item by clicking on the blue tab 'List your item' and let the bidding begin!
